I am asked questions, lots of questions every day. These questions arrive by email, phone, Twitter, blogs and by satellite. One of my biggest hang-ups working with the technologically agnostic is when someone reaches out with a question that can be answered by performing self-prompted research on the Internet. Sometimes questions turn into fire drills when they don’t need to be. Breathe, relax and research. I am here to help, but know that search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing are great places to start when researching new technologies, consumer insights and a world full of actionable data and supporting research.

Twitter was incepted in 2006 of in my home base of San Francisco, California. Just last week Twitter was valuated at 1 Billion dollars. Running off of venture capital still, this is amazing considering Twitter still hasn’t nailed down a revenue model. Twitter was originally created under the idea that communication moves fast. As a result short bursts of valuable information with outbound links, the ability to share photos and video were a great way to connect and communicate with people in real-time. Just like you would compose a text message, you are limited by the number of characters you can use. For Twitter, the maximum amount of characters you can use for your message is 140 characters. This is good for several reasons. First, it forces you to compact a thought, idea or share a piece of content within a specific size parameter. You need to be agile and eloquent with how you deliver your message plus links within a small amount of space. Second, it forces you to use correct grammar and spelling. Lastly, it forces you to get to the point. Share your big idea and “a-ha” moments. Twitter is only truly useful when you create eloquent, engaging, relevant content.

So why is Twitter important for me and my business?

On a personal level, Twitter is all about building your personal brand. Twitter is a great place to share personal thoughts, insights into hobbies, news, photos and engage in two-way dialogues with people that share similar interests. My Twitter account: www.Twitter.com/Pyesawichjr is focused around progressive technology, design, marketing strategy and advertising. I sometimes sprinkle in personal thoughts, updates and foodie Tweets, but for the most part I utilize Twitter as a way to connect and converse with other marketing, advertising, design and technology professionals. I consider my Twitter account to be my constant real-time stream of creative consciousness. You should tune in and elevate your mind. Don’t be misled, Twitter isn’t only about professional use but personal, fun and entertainment use as well. Either way, have fun and create content that adds value.

How can Twitter benefit your business? No better way than to get the very descriptive, open book “101” from Twitter here: http://business.twitter.com/twitter101/

This is the Twitter 101 for business site where you can find great insight about Twitter, how to learn Twitter, what it takes to get started, learning how to teach others, best practices and case studies. The important thing about Twitter or any digital resource is to look at it from your business model and your business objectives. Just like with any digital technology don’t limit yourself to one resource or one avenue of research. Get out there and dig around on the web or work with someone like myself or someone in your digital department to collect other opinions and resources specific to your business. What I’m saying is have a clearly defined strategy in anything and everything digital. Define your business objectives, identify and understand your audience and have a set of end goals in place. Please, and I repeat please don’t just engage in Twitter or any technology and haphazardly toss content around on the Internet. It really boils down to keeping your brand at top of mind, the messaging consistent and centered.
